Puppies FAQ
What are Chesapeake Bay Retrievers?
Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, or Chessies, are loyal, intelligent, and versatile dogs known for their love of water and outdoor sporting.
How do I adopt a puppy?
To adopt a puppy, please contact us through our Puppy Adoption Page for availability and adoption procedures.
What is their temperament?
Chessies are friendly, protective, and great with families, making them excellent companions and watchdogs. The more you socialize them as a puppy, the more versatile they will be around different kinds of people and in different environments.
Are they good with children?
Yes, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are known for being gentle and affectionate with children, especially kids in your family. As with many other areas of life, socializing your Chessie from a young age around children will help them to be the family dog you have been wanting!
How much exercise do they need?
Chessies require regular exercise, including walks and playtime, to stay healthy and happy. Want to know the way to your Chessie's heart? Take him swimming!
How often should they be groomed?
Chesapeake Bay Retrievers have a water-proof coat and their wavy curls should be brushed weekly to limit shed hair. Bathe occasionally as needed but not to often because their fur is fairly coarse. Feed your Chessie an oil rich diet (like salmon) to keep their coat from drying out.
When are puppies ready to adopt?
Puppies are generally ready to leave mom for their new home at 8 weeks.
What kind of coloration do chessies have?
Chessies typically come in one of three colors, sedge (red), deadgrass (dirty-blond), or brown.
